About Occlusal Nightguards

For patients experiencing tooth wear due to nighttime grinding and jaw clenching, your doctor might recommend an occlusal appliance, often called a nightguard or splint, to help alleviate the conditions associated with clenching and grinding. It's not uncommon for tooth wear to be associated with certain airway and breathing conditions, so your doctor may discuss this with you as well.

An occlusal appliance is worn overnight to create a barrier between upper and lower teeth, eliminating the damage caused when they rub against each other. This can help prevent tooth wear and improve jaw alignment. Research has shown that a well-designed hard appliance will help to relax the musculature, reducing wear even when the appliance is not being worn.

Given the potential for costly dental treatments caused by untreated tooth wear, it is important to work with your doctor to address the issue before more damage is sustained.

At Penz Dental Care, we have a top-of-the-line machine that we use to make our occlusal nightguards. Your custom nightguard will fit well and, with proper home care, will last a long time.
